I have lived in Mac-Groveland for more than 10 years. I used to live across the street from the College of St Catherine but now I’m a little closer to the University of St. Thomas and Macalester. I love living in the middle of three colleges. There are often events on campus that look interesting. I have access to their libraries. And it’s nice to have a wealth of babysitters so close.
I think the student population helps support the many restaurants and shops in our area. We are walking distance to at least a dozen restaurants, including some fancy ones such as Ristorante Luci and The Heartland. And on the rare occasion I want to cook, there are 3 grocery stores in the area. Being able to walk to shops, parks, and schools is one of my favorite characteristics about Mac-Groveland.
We are really spoiled for choice for schools for the kids too. Groveland grade school is very nearby and they have an excellent reputation. We happen to send our kids to Nativity, one of the many private schools in the area.
More than anything we enjoy our neighbors. Most of our neighbors live in single-family homes, although there is a duplex on the block. Many of our neighbors have young children, a few have college age kids (aka babysitters), and a few have grown kids or are grown ups and are single. There are working moms, stay-at-home-moms, teachers, business owners, and gardeners on our block. While most of us are from Minnesota we also have neighbors that hail from Australia, Japan, Scotland, Ireland, India, and other places. It’s a great mix and we make sure to get out and meet each other throughout the year – but definitely at the annual block party.
